Vendor Conversations: Adam Lowe Photography
Adam was another photographer who kept popping up on “this is who I recommend” lists. I am so glad that I finally got a chance to talk with him. He is way too much fun – gotta appreciate someone who wanted (and I think secretly still wants) to be Indiana Jones and to top it off, has a Grandma with connections!

How did Adam Lowe Photography come to be?
Adam Lowe Photography started a little over 2yrs ago. In 2002 I graduated from OIP&T (Ohio Institute of Photography & Technology with a degree in portrait photography and an emphasis on fashion. When I graduated I jumped right into sending out my portfolio and resume to different studios. At the time I was working with a few music magazine and doing random assignments. I started shooting photos around the age of 13 and in high school I started getting into shooting live music. In the mid 90′s Columbus had a great music scene going and I was a part of it. After sending out my resume and portfolio, I started working for a few studios in and around Columbus as a contract photographer. This really helped me get my bearings in Columbus. I assisted a lot of wedding photographers and found that I could really add my style of fashion photography to this setting. After working for so many studios, I just felt that I wanted to take my photography farther and start my own studio, thus Adam Lowe Photography was born.
How would you describe your style?
My style is definitely fashion/editorial/photojournalistic. I have always loved looking through fashion magazines. Companies such as Banana Republic, Louis Vuitton, Anthropology and Urban Outfitters all have great ad design. Capturing and creating the moment look and feels like the couple is extremely exciting.
What is your favorite aspect of your job?
Shooting the photos will always be my favorite aspect of my job. Second would be meeting new people and creating new and exciting images.
How many people shoot for Adam Lowe Photography?
There are always two photographers at every event. It’s me and an associate photographer.
What is the starting investment for a wedding?
My wedding packages start at $2,500. I can also create a custom package based on what the bride and groom are looking for.
Childhood ambition?
As far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a photographer. I think my earliest childhood ambition was to be an archeologist (aka Indiana Jones), but after a while, photographer was tops on my list.
Dream vacation?
I have taken my dream vacation a few times. I have tons of family in Germany and every few years we have a family reunion in Munich. My family is pretty tight so traveling with them is actually great fun. My sister and I usually take side trips around Europe while we are there. My birthday is during the Octoberfest. I have been known to put on traditional German outfits and get a little crazy. My Oma knows people who know people and so we get amazing seats in the Fisher Veroni tent. Last time we went my Oma conducted the tent band in Happy Birthday to me. The whole tent was singing along (each tent can hold probably a few thousand people), it was great.
Last time you laughed until it hurt?
Just yesterday (1/5/09) at band practice. Yeah, I’m in a band…I know…look at the photographer in a band…how much more artsy can one get. So, we were working on vocals for a song and for some reason the wrong note kept coming out of my mouth. I mean this was like if Chewbacca was to singing an Enya song…it just kept coming out horrid. We were all dying laughing. I think I might have teared up a little from laughing of course. I am a man, I don’t cry, except when I watch romantic comedies.
Favorite part of a wedding day?
My favorite part of a wedding day, for me as a photographer is when I get to take the bride and groom out and about. We usually find a few great locations that mix with their style and mine. Its fun to bring out the sassy and GQ side of the bride and groom. I’m definitely an urban style photographer and so I like to bring out that side of my work and combine it with the fun and excitement of each couple that I work with.
Last thing you bought?
Cologne from Banana Republic and a Grande Iced Soy Chai from Starbucks!
Greatest length gone to get the perfect shot?
I shot a wedding during the 2008 blizzard. The images came out wonderful and the bride and groom had so much fun. One of the images is featured in the most recent Columbus Bride.
Breaking rules and going the distance is kind of an everyday thing for a photographer. When I have an idea for a certain shot, even if I think it might be something the bride or groom might not be into, it never hurts to just ask. Most of the time they will be willing to take chances and try something different. That’s where the trust issue comes in with your photographer. Trust them and they will get the photographs you have seen and love from their work.
Favorite animal at the zoo?
By far…bats!
Can’t live without?
Well, of course my camera…but other than that I would say my daily planner. I would be a mess without that.
Hidden talent?
I can make the Predator (the movie) sound.
Favorite quote?
“The sanest days are mad” (Morrissey) or “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams” (Willy Wonka)
Best compliment ever received?
The best compliment is when people genuinely love my images. I am a photographer through and through.
If you weren’t a photographer what would you be?
Definitly a chef. Before going to school for photography, I also thought about going to culinary school. I cook all the time and really enjoy it. I love Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern as well as Top Chef. I just have this culinary side of me that would bust out and cook up a storm for anyone, not that it will be good…but I try damn hard.
Describe your perfect day.
Wake up after about 8 or 9 good hours of sleep. Make breakfast, consisting of home fries, 3 fried eggs and toast with jelly and on the side, Sriracha sauce. Sit down on the couch and watch a movie while eating breakfast. After breakfast, somehow the dishes are cleaned and put away without me doing a thing. I get ready for the day, step outside and it’s a perfect 76 degrees. I take a ride on my Ducati (motorcycle) around town. Pick up my girlfriend and we go get smoothies and possibly push around on our skateboards and find an amazing pool to swim in. Around 6:30 we head back to my place for dinner. General Tso’s fake chicken from this restaurant in Georgetown called Harmony is sitting on my coffee table for us. We turn on the TV and a brand new episode of 24 is all cued up. After dinner we head over to her house to pick up our music gear because we have a show later that night. That sounds like a perfect day. And of course, I will have my camera on me at all times.
Please share with us some of your favorite images from 2008.

Thanks to Adam for answering my questions!
Tomorrow we will wrap things up with Jim from Davis Photography!
