{We’re back!!!!  We are wrapping up the event season – just one last wedding for New Year’s Eve along with some holiday parties for both corporate and private clients – and I am so excited to have some more time for things like blogging including our Friday Favorites!  Lots of wedding pictures are rolling in and we’ll be sharing them soon – stay tuned and have a wonderful weekend!}

I don’t know about where you are but the temperature is dropping here in Columbus!  My mind is turning to staying warm and planning cozy winter weddings!  What screams winter wedding to you?

Favorite Gown: I think this dress pretty much shatters the notion that long sleeves means covered up and not sexy, wouldn’t you say?  This traffic stopping number is from Israeli designer Inbal Dror’s 2012 Rome Collection.

Favorite Bouquet:  I LOVE the shades of white, silver and dusty green from the silver brunia berries, juniper sprigs, pine boughs, seeded eucalyptus, and dusty miller.  They play so well off the spray roses and anemones in particular!

WinterBouquet

Favorite Bout: This bout is a perfect compliment for our wintery bouquet with the brunia berries backed by a dusty miller leaf.

Favorite Cake: I did say cozy, right?  What’s more cozy than a cable knit sweater?

wintercake

Favorite Decor: You don’t have to scatter snowflakes or pinecones to make your wedding reception feel wintery – tons of candles and clean, cool toned lighting lend a sophisticated, upscale air (chill?) to any room.

Favorite Extra: Cranberry Margarita – I will take 2 (or possibly 3)!

Hope you have a warm and cozy weekend!  On a personal note, happy Flatiron Anniversary to my husband – 13 years ago, we had our first date at the Flatiron in Columbus.  I am so very glad we both showed up that night!

Happy Friday!  It’s Friday Favorites: The Mother’s Day edition!  We changed things up a touch today to make our Friday Favorites all about Mom!  In case you forgot, Sunday is Mother’s Day (did you get your remember to get your mom(s) a card and/or gift?  You still have time!)  I will be celebrating with my two girls and my husband – they’ve got plans but won’t tell me what they are so I am looking forward to that!

Favorite Gown: If I am being honest, I must admit that I don’t care for the majority of the mother’s gowns out there.  They just seem so heavy – too much beading, heavy lace, and long sleeves.  Moms are celebrating the expansion of their families with a wedding – they are gaining a son or daughter – so they should look and FEEL gorgeous too!!  I am a HUGE fan of Collection 20 from Watters – the gowns are elegant and well styled.  They have taken the typical ‘worry’ areas for women into account such as arms, legs and hips.  Plus it is Watters so they have a gajillion colors – I love this short gown (its available floor length too) with the lace overlay and ribbon sash.  The dress is available in 10 colors, the sash in 28 colors and the lace in 3 colors – that makes it SO easy to coordinate (not match!) with the bridal party.  Remember, mom’s gown does not have to make her feel matronly but it should make her feel beautiful!

Collection20

Favorite Bouquet: Some moms simply don’t want to wear a traditional corsage – maybe don’t want to pin something on and ruin their dress or they really don’t like wrist corsages. Luckily, moms have a lot of options for flowers for the wedding – of course a pin on or wrist corsage, but purse corsages, hair flowers, and nosegays are options as well.  I love when the bride surprises mom with a smaller version of the bouquet she carried at her own wedding – can you imagine the look on her face when she sees it?  Just find some pictures and your florist should be able to help!

Favorite Gift: I think questions about what to get the parents is among my top three most often asked questions.  Typically I see couples giving their parents an album of the pictures after the wedding – a hanky is also a pretty standard wedding day gift.  I am also a fan of giving mom something special just for her that she can have after the wedding as well.  Birthstone jewelry is always very popular and lots of moms have stacking birthstone rings or necklaces with their kid’s birthstones.  A really sweet touch would be to give your new mother in law something with your birthstone on it to add to it – after all the saying goes the mom and dad aren’t losing a child, they’re gaining one, right?  Love this pendant with a name, date, and birthstone from Red Envelope!

Favorite Incorporation: I love when brides want to find a way to incorporate their mother’s or grandmother’s gown or veil into their own wedding day ensemble.  I haven’t had a bride wear their mom’s gown but I have had bride’s wear their mother’s veil.  I have also seen pieces of gowns and veils turned into ring pillows, garters, chuppah toppers, and more.  There is a great rundown on DIY Bride of different ways to incorporate your mom’s gown – just click here!  My favorite is using a piece of fabric or lace from mom’s gown as a bouquet wrap – just make sure mom is okay with cutting up her gown first!  Love the buttons on this one!

Favorite Tribute: For those brides and grooms whose moms are no longer with them, the wedding day can be a really tough one.  We try to come up with ways to honor their memory and still make the bride or groom feel like mom is walking right alongside them.  We’ve done handkerchiefs around the bouquet handle, wedding pictures of the parents on easels in the ceremony room, memorial flowers in a prominent place, etc.  One of my very favorite ways to honor a mom who has passed on is to attach a locket with her picture in it to the bouquet – this can be done for the bride’s mom or the groom’s and is a lovely way to honor their memory on a day they would have loved.

locketsonbouquet

Favorite Mom: My mom Kris, of course!  Add my wonderful Grandmothers, mother in law Shelby and ALL the Moms I’ve been lucky enough to work with over the years (usually at least 2 a wedding!) and I have been extraordinarily blessed with amazing role models.  I only hope I can to live up to those role models for my own girls.  This picture was taken several years ago at Abby’s first birthday party by Grogan Studios.

I’ll be celebrating with my girls – they’ve apparently got plans for me but haven’t spilled the beans just yet.  Ellie has let me know she already made me my card and hid it somewhere in her room.  Oh, the mind of a 5 year old – let’s just say hidden is a relative term.  Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there – whether your kids are human-babies or fur-babies, I hope you are extra spoiled this weekend!!

Happy Friday!  I’m super excited to be heading to see Tim Gunn (or Baileywick for those of you who are Sofia the First fans) at Franklin Park Conservatory’s annual Hat Day!  I will be posting pictures on Instagram (Either on EDEPWeddings or Emilie’s Instagram) of all the fabulous headwear so make sure to check that out!

Favorite Gown: My interns and I took a trip to see Lindsay at La Jeune Mariee this week for a class in all things bridal wear.  Lindsay just got back from Bridal Market in NYC and mentioned that they picked up Jenny Packham for the Bridal Collection.  These amazing gowns haven’t been available in Ohio until now so I was super excited!  This week’s gown is from Jenny Packham and is so appropriately named Rapunzel.  Gorgeous!

Rapunzel

Favorite Bouquet: I love this beautiful blush and white bouquet with peonies, anemone, and astilbe.  So very pretty!

peony-astilibe-anemone

Favorite Bout: I like a little whimsy in a wedding and this bout fits the bill!  A little glitz rounds out the feather and (relatively) simple mum.

featherbout

Favorite Cake: Simple with a beautiful shape and sweet silhouettes – what’s not to love on this cake?

hexcake

Favorite Decor: Manzanita branches with pink roses and orchids as well as hanging amaranthus with beautiful candle holders lined this table.  Go see the rest of this wedding – so lovely and intimate!

Favorite Extra: In honor of this weekend’s running of The Kentucky Derby (139th to be exact) – how about a Mint Julep recipe?  I’m honestly not a big fan but they are a Kentucky classic!

mintjulep

Lots of things to celebrate this weekend – Kentucky Derby, Cinco de Mayo, Gallery Hop and OSU’s graduation!  EDEP’s own intern Courtney will be graduating – very, very proud of her!!  Have a great weekend!

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Happy Friday to you and yours!  We’ve had a nice quiet week but could do without the frost warnings!  Looking forward to a bit of a warm up next week.  Did you happen to catch all the pretties from Bridal Week in NYC this week?  We saw LOTS of gorgeous dresses and sashes and veils and other pretties on Instagram that we can’t wait to see in our Columbus bridal boutiques!!

Favorite Gown: Loving this one shoulder number called Emporium from Pronovias.  I like the sash but it looks like it might be a separate piece which I like even more since that means you can (possibly) personalize it to your taste.  I also love the draping of the skirt and the train – so, so, so pretty!

Emporium

Favorite Bouquet: I’m having a small love affair with yellow right now (I blame Sandy, my 4/13 bride, and her gorgeous yellow, black and white wedding!) so this bouquet totally fits my obsession!   Garden roses, lily of the valley, peonies, and astilbe make up this gorgeous yellow and white textured bouquet.  (Astilbe is the frilly, spiky flower close to the stems – it also comes in pink and I ADORE this rarely used flower.)

Favorite Bout: More astilbe – told you I adore it!  Ignore the beautiful rock behind it – picture a tux or suit instead!

Favorite Cake: Interesting take on ombre on this one!  I think this cake shows that wedding cakes don’t have to be perfectly smooth to be beautiful.  (Side note – I cannot find the original source on this one – just the link to Pinterest.  If you know where it came from, please comment so I can give credit where it is due!)

Favorite Decor: Ah-mazing pink orchids at the Mandarin Hotel in NYC.  Love the hanging glass orbs too – the whole thing is just breathtaking!

hangingorchids

Favorite Extra: Confession, I’m not normally a shoe person.  I have stupid feet so for me shoe shopping is akin to bathing suit shopping.  I know, turn in my girl card.  All that being said, I die over these shoes.  I love the sparkles, I love the bow, I love me some Kate Spade Charm Heels.  Perfect wedding shoe.

Have a wonderful weekend and as an added bonus, click over to Cup of Zup for a fabulous speech from Tom Fletcher (he was in the band McFly apparently) at his wedding.  So well done!

The true root of our job here at Emilie Duncan Event Planning is love.  Our basic job is to make people happy and make sure they have a wonderful, love filled day.  That being said, we do tend to dwell in a happy place and tragedies like those we have witnessed this week weigh heavy on our hearts and minds.  Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the cowardly acts at the Boston Marathon and the tragic accident in Texas.

Favorite Gown: I know, I know again with the jaw dropping back, what can I say?  I love a gorgeous exit.  🙂  Meet Elisabeth from Nicole Miller.  I love the straps on the back and the simple, wide band at the waist which is pretty much perfect to add a little bling in the form of a belt or sash!

NMElisabeth

Favorite Bouquet: Pink, green, and white peonies, hydrangea and stephanotis make this bouquet perfectly textured and oh so sweet. Such a great springtime bouquet!

PeonyHydrangeaPinkandgreen

Favorite Bout: Love this little pink peony bout – the added green makes it still feel masculine.

peonybout

Favorite Cake: Love the flowers on this one – so pretty and delicate.

springcake

Favorite Decor: I love using a sash as a sort of placemat on long tables – I did something similar for a photo shoot a few years ago and it looked amazing!  The lights and chandeliers are gorgeous as well.  I pretty much love everything about this set up!

barnwedding

Favorite Extra: I love this chalkboard style ceremony backdrop – it also obviously makes for great pictures.  Would be fabulous to do something like this for an open photobooth as well!

Have a wonderful weekend – we’ve got pictures to share from Amy and Drew’s March 23 wedding by Little Tree Studios – we’re hoping to pare them down to a reasonable number but that is proving to be tough!

Happy Friday!  We’ve been enjoying some amazing spring weather this week – we even broke out the sidewalk chalk at home which was wonderful!  Onto my Friday favorites…

Favorite Dress: So I have been doing my Friday Favorites for a little while now and I am realizing that I have a thing for the back of dresses – this number from Essense of Australia is no different!  Look at that gorgeous lace and I love the deep V and sash!

EssenceDress

Favorite Bouquet: Love the soft tones and mixed texture of this bouquet with dahlias, peonies, and garden roses.

Favorite Bout: I have to be honest, I don’t know whether it is a mum or a dahlia (I think it is a mum) but I love the pink bloom with the hypericum berries.  So bright and cheery!

zinnia bout

Favorite Cake: Personally, I am not crazy about the letters but I am obsessed with the lace detail – so beautiful!

Cherylscake

Favorite Decor: In honor of all the gorgeous cherry blossoms blooming in Washington DC right now, I had to show this lovely cherry blossom arch.  So simple and so pretty!!

cherryblossoms

Favorite Extra: Tangerines and clementines last about 0.42 seconds in my house – if I let them, both my girls would live on them!  If I ever can stash a few before they eat them, I will have to give this Double Tangerine Cocktail a try – this would be a great signature cocktail for an orange wedding too!

We’ll be at one of our favorite venues this weekend – the Athletic Club of Columbus – helping Sandy and Jeff get married! (Don’t forget to follow ‘EDEPWeddings’ on Instagram and Emilie Duncan Event Planning on Facebook for lots of pictures of this lovely yellow, black and white wedding!  Watch for the travel themed details as this couple LOVES to travel together!). Have a wonderful weekend!

{I needed a break after the amazing evening at Cakes for a Cause last Thursday so I took last week off.  The event was a huge success – more about that soon with lots of pictures of all the fun!   For now, onto this week’s goodies!}

Favorite Gown: Meet Francisca from Watters – she’s so pretty!  I think this dress would create a beautiful, nipped in waist with that gorgeous draping.  Illusion is a lovely thing!

FranciscaWatters

Favorite Bouquet: Love the color combo of yellow, grey and white.  Succulents, billy balls, ranunculus, lamb’s ear, and lots more fun blooms make this bouquet a stunner!

Since next Thursday is Cakes for a Cause which benefits Mid-Ohio Foodbank and orange is the color of hunger, I thought an orange week was appropriate!

Favorite Gown: Not a lot of orange wedding gowns but bridesmaids gowns are a different story!  Love this Anita bridesmaid gown in Fresh Tangerine from J. Crew.

Favorite Bouquet: Love the tonal orange shades in this gorgeous tulip, ranunculus, rose, dahlia, freesia, marigold and orchid bouquet.

Favorite Boutonniere:  I do love ranunculus and how great is that orange gingham tie?

Favorite Cake: Love this bright orange cake with pretty white, sugar flowers!  So bright and cheery!

Favorite Extra: Yum!  White Sangria with oranges – what a fun and colorful signature drink!

Have a great weekend!  It will be a busy one for us and we couldn’t be more excited!!  Saturday we’re kicking off the wedding season with Amy and Drew over at Creekside in Gahanna (don’t forget to follow ‘EDEPWeddings’ on Instagram and Twitter for lots of pictures of this gorgeous blue and white wedding!).  Sunday we’ll be at the Renaissance Tasting – make sure to say hi if you’re there!  Of course, next Thursday, we’ll be down in Grove City having a great time at Cakes for a Cause – hope you’ll join us!

How about a little green today to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this weekend?  Happy Friday!  One tip on using green in your wedding – there are so many shades of green and, in my opinion, you have to be really careful when it comes to tonal shading.  Sometimes really crazy bright green (think chartreuse) doesn’t mesh well with cool sage – if you want to go tonal with shades of green, talk to your designer about what will work or head to the paint store to grab some paint chips.

Favorite Gown: Okay, this isn’t green but it’s gorgeous so I hope you’ll give me a pass!  I love a short gown – I think they look so sophisticated!  This one from Romona Keveza’s fall 2013 line is lovely!

RKShortDress

Favorite Bouquet: I am generally not a fan of hand wired bouquets (honestly, I don’t like the skinny handles) but I like this one – you don’t see a ton of gladiolus in wedding work but I think they are so pretty!

greenbouquet

Favorite Boutonniere: Succulents are a great way to bring in green as is eucalyptus – this bout has both!

greenbout

Favorite Cake: Gorgeous sage green fondant cake with lovely scroll work.  Beautiful!  I like the monogram as well.

sagegreencake

Favorite Decor: Lovely linens, lush long planters, pretty shade of green chair pads- love it all!  (Click over to see more of this green wedding – seriously, go!)

greendecor

Favorite Extra: How about a shot for St. Patrick’s Day?  This Irish Flag shot is 1 part creme de menthe topped with 1 part Baileys Irish Cream (they subbed Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur for whiter color) and 1 part Grand Marnier.  Yum!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  Erin go Bragh!

{I’m in a colorful, ombre sort of mood today – must be all the snow we dealt with around here this week!}

Favorite Dress: This one would take some courage but this silk satin fit to flare gown with hand dyed ombre feather skirt from Kelly Faetanini certainly caught my eye!  I love the movement on the train – just lovely!

KFFeatherGown

Favorite Bouquet: I love the fuchsia and purples in this bouquet. It feels free form but with enough structure to be elegant – in my opinion, if a bouquet is too crazy, with no underlying plan to the construction, it can stop feeling that way.

fushiabouquet

Favorite Boutonniere: I love lavender – it smells wonderful and  looks lovely.  I suggest using fresh lavender versus dried – it become very brittle when dried and all that hugging will cause the poor thing to disintegrate!

lavendarbout

Favorite Cake: More ombre!  I thought this was a nice cake to compliment this week’s dress!  Ombre, feathery and would probably take some courage.  🙂

ombrecake

Favorite Decor: I said it was an ombre kind of week, right?  I love this simple ribbon treatment – I wouldn’t suggest this for too many chairs, likely just the bride and groom because this would take a while!

ombreweddingchair

Favorite Extra: If you designate a hashtag on Instagram for your guests to tag their photos with, use this trick to grab them and create a 16×20 print at Costco for under $10.

instagramprint

Have a wonderful weekend – we’ve got a hint of spring around here after that (hopefully) last gasp of winter so we’re hoping for some outdoor play time this weekend!
