Happy New Year! Welcome 2016!

The days are long but the years are short…

That quote rings so true to me especially as I look back at the past year and the special events we were lucky enough to be a part of…2015 was a pretty fantastic year – here’s hoping 2016 can somehow top it!

Here’s a peek at what helped make 2015 so wonderful:

*We kicked off the year with Lauren and Lucas’ gorgeous (and rather chilly) January 10 wedding at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in German Village and St. Charles Preparatory School in Bexley.  We learned what a “hog trough dance” is – some sources say it is a Cajun tradition, although I have heard German and Appalachian too.  Wherever it came from, it was hilarious and we had 3 troughs of varying strength that night! The Knot apparently liked this one as much as we did because it was featured over the summer.

*At the end of February, our family celebrated Abby’s 5th birthday at Walt Disney World! I went a little crazy with the GoPro and iMovie and created this little video.  Fair warning, it is half an hour long and has lots of cute little girls meeting Mickey and Minnie and it might make you want to hop a plane to ‘The Happiest Place on Earth’ ASAP:

*Shanay and Brian were married at Grace Church in Powell on March 14 and we had surprisingly warm, albeit breezy, weather for that time of year.  So breezy that the balloon release was a little more tricky than we had anticipated!  For reception at High Line Car House in Columbus, we loved that Shanay picked a bundt cake for their wedding cake because that’s the only kind of cake she actually likes and guests had their choice of mini bundt cakes in several flavors!

*The 6th annual Cakes for a Cause took place at Mid-Ohio Foodbank on April 2 and we raised enough meals to feed 33 people every single meal for a year!  That brings our total from the last 6 years to well over 150,000 meals for our neighbors in Central Ohio.  I actually lit one of our live auction cakes on fire (well, it was a torch candle) and as you can see from the picture, this made both me and Monica Day a bit nervous!

*We had a little break until May 30 when we kicked off wedding season in full force with Ashley and Dom at St. Francis of Assisi in Victorian Village.  We dodged raindrops all day but managed to miss the gale force winds and sideways rain that hit right as cocktail hour began at The Ivory Room in downtown Columbus.  Ashley’s dress had a heart made from a piece of her grandmother’s wedding gown sewn into it with both her grandmother and mother’s initials and wedding dates embroidered on it in blue thread – a perfect something blue!

*I am pretty sure that Elena and Greg’s June 6 wedding was the only day in May and June that we didn’t have rain.  Thank goodness because we needed clear skies since we were at Jorgensen Farms – luckily, the day could not have been more beautiful!  Greg surprised everyone with a performance by TBDBITL (if you aren’t from around here, that’s OSU’s Marching Band) and guests enjoyed pies instead of wedding cake.  Once again, The Knot liked this one too – it was featured this fall.

*Hallie and Fred were supposed to be married outside at Rocky Fork Hunt and Country Club on June 13 but, you guessed it, we were rained out 30 minutes before the guests arrived!  They were married in a tent on the patio but right before Hallie walked down the aisle, the sun came out and stayed out for the entire ceremony!  It was quite the party with the night ending with everyone – parents of the groom included – in the pool…fully clothed! Who needs the rain when you have the pool?!

*June 20 brought ANOTHER rainy day – Carolyn and Kenley were supposed to be married at the new Wedding Garden at Wedgewood Country Club but the rain completely washed us out!  We moved everything inside for a California style ceremony with everyone at tables in the ballroom and it was lovely.  The bride said she loved how things turned out…possibly more than if we’d been outside!  I am just tickled to announce that these high school sweethearts are expecting a little munchkin in May!!

*We were back at High Line Car House on July 18 for Amy and Jon’s wedding!  It was a gorgeous day with both the ceremony and reception on site at HLCH.  Conspiracy kept the dance floor packed all night and I don’t think Amy stopped smiling once all night – nothing, and I mean nothing, makes me happier than a bride and groom who are just obviously on cloud 9.  It was a great way to celebrate my birthday.  🙂

*Adrienne and Ken were married at their home in Powell on August 1 and kicked off our marathon August.  It was a gorgeous afternoon with a sweet ceremony that included Adrienne’s son being FaceTimed in from ROTC training – True Video was able to make that happen and the couple could not have been more happy he was able to see the vows!  A big tent and some really rowdy and wonderful friends made for a perfect evening!

*Natalie and Brian had to go all the way to NYC to meet even though they’re both from Columbus but they came home for their August 8 wedding. They were married at Holy Cross Church and held their reception at High Line Car House.  Rose Bredl did the most amazing installation of a gazillion floating tulips over the huge Tuscan style head table – it was simply jaw dropping. We’ll be adding a gallery from this wedding to the website soon so keep an eye out for that!

*Viktoriya and Eric were married at Franklin Park Conservatory on August 14 in a traditional Jewish ceremony.  They had a casual reception following the ceremony and then had a more formal reception the next evening at The Athletic Club of Columbus.

*Jessica and PJ were married at Trinity Episcopal Church with a gorgeous, vintage inspired reception at Taylor Mansion on August 22.  Jessica knew exactly what she wanted when it came to the design of the wedding – vintage elegance.  She had a very clear vision and nailed it on wedding day – you’ll see more pictures of this one soon!

*We closed out the marathon that was August with Emma and Michael on August 29 at Holy Family Catholic Church and Camp Mary Orton.  We loved their sweet, vintage inspired wedding with one heck of a dance floor!  We had to kick everyone out at the end of the night – always the sign of a good wedding!

*On September 12, we took a little trip up to Warren to help Laura and Chris with their wedding.  If you were married at the Ivory Room in the last few years, you might recognize her!  They had a lovely ceremony at the Butler Art Institute followed by a reception at The Avalon Inn.  Everything was gorgeous and it was wonderful to see Laura take off her catering hat and put on her bridal hat!

*We hit a huge milestone on September 19 with Randy and HL – it was our 100th wedding!  We could not have picked a more wonderful couple to mark that occasion.  The gentlemen were married at Broad Street United Methodist in one of the most emotional ceremonies I have had the privilege of witnessing.  Their gorgeous fall reception followed at Scioto Reserve Country Club.  My favorite part was the wish lanterns that we launched at the end of the evening – seeing them trail across the sky as they floated off was lovely.

*Grant is from Ohio (I did 2 of his cousin’s weddings) but Jingjing is from China and they met at OSU in grad school. Quite a long way to go to meet your soul mate but some things are obviously meant to be.  Jingjing had two gowns for their October 3rd wedding – one for the ceremony at St. Joseph’s Cathedral and one for the reception at the Renaissance Hotel.  Both were gorgeous and both were hand made by her mother.  After the wedding here was over, their families (including Grant’s parents and sister) hopped on a plane and went to China for 2 weeks to have a wedding over there.  So cool!

*October 24 found us helping a great charity with their tailgate for the OSU/Rutger’s game.  KidSmiles provides dental care for kids who fall into the gap between Medicaid and private insurance – all done with volunteers and donations.  Amazing organization and it was an honor to work with them!

*We celebrated November 14 with Lauren and Josh for our last wedding of the year!  I have known Lauren and Josh for a while – they were friends with another past bride and Josh actually told me at that wedding 3 years ago that he was going to marry her and I was going to their planner.  He was right on both accounts!  The wedding ceremony at Our Lady of Perpetual Help was absolutely lovely and the reception at The Westin was simply stunning – it was a truly wonderful day!

*Our last event of the year was a corporate holiday party at Copious on December 11.  We had a casino night with lots of prizes and the associates seemed to love it.  Sad to say, I still don’t understand craps but that was one of the more rowdy tables all night!

2015-12-11 17.11.24

*On the personal side of things, Instagram tells the story best so feel free to follow my personal account over there along with the EDEP account.  Let’s see – a one paragraph recap: Ellie sold Girl Scout Cookies, we took that fantastic trip to Disney World, I spent a night or two in the hospital (I’m fine!).  We recolored the grout in our kitchen (easier than it sounds but way more tedious), saw Jimmy Buffet in Cincy, went zip lining, spent a lot of time at the pool, and met a giraffe at The Wilds.  Ellie took ballet lessons, Abby started Kindergarten and Ellie started 3rd grade, we camped in the backyard, Ellie played soccer and Abby took gymnastics.  We took a trip to Washington DC where a squirrel tried to climb up my child’s leg, we got a tour of the West Wing of the White House, and watched Michigan State shock U of M in the last 3 seconds which still makes me smile!  We played in the leaves, Batgirl and Wonder Woman stopped by for Halloween, we went to Randy’s 25th HS reunion, and celebrated Christmas with lots of American Girl items and some upcoming adventures!  We closed out the year with our traditional trip to Jeni’s Ice Cream and reflected on a fantastic 2015 while looking forward to an even better 2016!

2015-10-15 21.37.41

Over half of the weddings and events we did this year were either referrals from past clients or repeat clients – that’s a very happy statistic and one we’d love to repeat this year as well!  A HUGE thank you to everyone who passed along our name, sent their friends and family our way and generally showed us a lot of love!  If you or anyone you know is still looking for a wedding planner, drop us a line!

Also, make sure to follow @edepweddings on instagram for wedding day pictures from our 2016 weddings!  We do a much better job of keeping that updated with lots of pretties and major amounts of love!  We’ll be at The Athletic Club of Columbus, The Loft at Dock580Scioto Country ClubHigh Line Car HouseWedgewood Country ClubCamp Mary Orton, and Copious – lots of old favorites and a few new or new-to-us locations that we can’t wait to visit!

Happy New Year from my family to yours and as always, I hope that 2016 brings you more health, happiness, success, security, comfort, compassion, healing and love than you could ever need!

Wedding Featured on The Knot!

Thursday, June 4th, 2015

The Emilie Duncan Event Planning team is coming up on wedding 2 of a 4 wedding stretch this month (make sure to follow us on Instagram for all the pretties, all the fun and the behind the scenes details: @edepweddings) so we’re behind – again – on updating the blog.  I still have lots of pretty pictures from last year’s weddings to share and will get back to that in…July…hopefully.

Until I can get back to full write ups, I wanted to pop in to share Lauren and Lucas’ gorgeous January 10th wedding at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in German Village and St. Charles Preparatory School in Bexley that was featured on The Knot: Lauren And Lucas.

Beyond the ones featured on The Knot, I wanted to share some just a few more pictures from this beautiful winter wedding from Elizabeth Ann Photography! Enjoy!

The detail and hand work on this cake from Anita Kline was just exquisite! We were all completely obsessed with it and so were our Instagram followers!Subler_Moeller_ElizabethAnn_Photography_Moeller446_low

If you look closely, you’ll see that the singer for this sweet Father/Daughter dance is actually the Groom, Lucas. Such a touching moment and a first for us!Subler_Moeller_ElizabethAnn_Photography_Moeller566_low

We’re helping Elena and Greg get married at Jorgensen Farms this weekend so make sure to watch instagram for all the fun!  If you could keep your fingers crossed that the forecast holds, we’d appreciate that too!

 {More awesome weddings from last year coming right up!}

Katy and Cam were married at First Congregational Church and then the guests walked across the street to celebrate at the Columbus Museum of Art.  We used fresh herbs to denote the guest’s meal choices and every place setting had a sprig of fresh rosemary – the room smelled like heaven!  A mix of rustic and vintage with mercury glass, lace and wooden boxes on the tables.  Make sure to take a peek at the bridesmaid’s bouquets – they were all astilbe which is one of my very favorite feathery flowers!!

Friday, April 10th, 2015

{We’re taking a look back at some of our 2014 weddings before the 2015 wedding season hits full swing!}

I am so excited to share Josh and Duane’s wedding with you today!  They were legally wed in Maryland but came to Columbus where they lived for many years to hold their ceremony and throw one heck of a party!  We had a professional opera singer and full choir at church, two spectacular performances from Nina West, a Best Man who rapped his toast (and totally earned the mic drop!) and a head table decked out in sequins.  Of course, we also had an awesome couple who’ve been together for 17 YEARS who were surrounded by friends and family who love and support them!  I think you’ll see it was a pretty fantastic day!

As we gear up for 2015’s very busy wedding season, how about we spend a little time looking back at 2014’s weddings?  I am challenging myself to keep the picture count to no more than 12 on each post but we’ll see – 2014 was a great year after all!

Onto the pretties!  Let’s start at the very beginning (of the 2014 wedding season anyway) with Kristin and Mark’s lovely April wedding!

Happy New Year! Welcome 2015!

Thursday, January 1st, 2015

Wait! How is 2014 is already over? It seems like I was just recapping 2013! It was an amazing year filled with beautiful weddings and events – here’s some of our highlights:

*Emilie Duncan Event Planning’s office officially moved into our new home office.  I love that clients feel comfortable enough to come in, kick off their shoes and curl up on my couch while we plan their weddings!

*We welcomed our new intern class in January. Kelsey, Megan and Shelby were with me all year and were  wonderful team! We managed to get an extended team picture at Courtney’s wedding – Kelsey, Maddie and Courtney (two of EDEP’s 2013 interns), me, Shelby and Megan.

(Thanks to Little Tree Studios)

*We kicked off wedding season on April 5th in gorgeous fashion at Kristin and Mark’s wedding at The Westin.  It was a beautiful pink and gold affair complete with deep dish stuffed pizzas flown in from Chicago for the late night snack!

*The 5th annual Cakes for a Cause took place at the Mid-Ohio Foodbank on April 18.  Tickets sold out once again and we raised enough to feed 35 people every meal for a year – over 38,000 meals for the hungry in Central Ohio!  Make sure to save the date for April 2, 2015 for our 6th annual event – come eat, have fun and help lots of people!

*April 26 found us at the new Highline Car House with Andrea and Andrew.  This was the first time at this gorgeous new venue and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful wedding! Intimate and colorful – it was a wonderful day!

-373(Thanks to Novia Photography)

*We were back at Highline Car House on June 14 for Josh and Duane’s wedding.  It was our first same sex wedding and we were honored to have been part of this celebration that was 17 YEARS in the making! We had a completely sequined head table, a best man who rapped his toast and the amazing Nina West – trust me when I say that doesn’t really scratch the surface of this one!  Josh and Duane’s wedding was selected to be featured in The Knot Ohio Magazine which hits stands this month! I will share scans soon!

*On July 19 we were at the Columbus Museum of Art for Katy and Cam’s Tuscan inspired wedding.  We loved their place cards tied with rosemary, thyme and lavender with an extra piece of rosemary at every place setting.  The room smelled (and looked) like heaven!

AWP_5875(Thanks to Ashley West Photography)

*Even a noisy thunderstorm complete with an intense downpour couldn’t stop Nicole and Ryan’s July 26 tented wedding at Freeman Farms! Gorgeous wood farm tables, 10 bridesmaids and groomsmen, swiss dot linens, string lights and royal blue – it was stunning!

*August 9 found me at my 20th High School Reunion but my amazing team was taking great care of Lauren and Daniel.  They had a gorgeous wedding at The Loft at Dock580 where they got to see Daniel’s trademark high kick in action.  Fun fact: Daniel is a triplet, one of two triplets (from different families) we worked with this year!

Wedding 081(Thanks to Kevin Keefer)

*Every wedding is special but some weddings are family!  Courtney was one of my interns last year and we were so excited when she got engaged.  She and Joe (her junior high school crush – as evidenced by the diary page she displayed at the wedding that gushed over a cute boy named Joe!) were married at Camp Mary Orton on August 16.  Courtney designed and planned everything and it was absolutely beautiful!

2014-08-16_Courtney&Joe_0120(Thanks to Little Tree Studios)

*Sarina and Steve’s August 23rd wedding found us in yet another newer venue, The Vue. I loved the slideshow playing in the background of their dances and for the rest of the evening – it was fun to see pictures of Sarina as a little girl while she was dancing with her Dads!  We also got to see Daniel and Lauren from our August 9 wedding – he and Steve grew up together.  It also makes me happy that S&S and I are practically neighbors – they live right down the road from me.

2014-08-23_Sarina&Steve_0530(Thanks to Little Tree Studios)

*We kicked off September with Karen and Brian’s September 6th wedding at Muirfield Village Golf Club.  Brian played baseball for OSU and we had a big Buckeye themed candy bar for the guests.  Karen and two of her sisters were in Nicole and Ryan’s July 26 wedding so it was lovely to see lots of the same people again.  Fun fact – Karen is the other triplet we worked with this year!  She and her sisters are identical triplets.

*Molly and Andrew were married on September 20.  It was a sweet, intimate wedding held in her sister’s backyard.  The couple lives in South Carolina but are from Columbus so they came back home to get married.  I loved that their first dance was a ‘Carolina Shag’ in honor of their current home.

Banks0389(Thanks to Banks Photography)

*Taylor and Greg were married on October 4 at a private venue in the Brewery District.

BRAUNphotography_Taylor_Greg109(Thanks to Braun Photography)

*When the groom is a firefighter, it’s only right that he should arrive to the ceremony in a fire truck!  Lindsay and Matt were married on November 8 at the Doubletree Hotel in Newark.  We loved their bright flowers next to the chocolate brown of the bridesmaid’s gowns – it suited this autumn wedding perfectly!

View More: http://malloryplusjustin.pass.us/hamshire(Thanks to Mallory + Justin Photography)

*We closed out 2014 with ugly sweaters and reindeer games (think people wrapping presents while wearing oven mitts, drawing a snowman blindfolded and transferring candy canes between bowls using no hands!) at a fun corporate holiday party on December 12.  When the client requests ugly sweaters, never let it be said that Emilie Duncan Event Planning doesn’t commit!

2014-12-12 11.07.542014-12-12 11.07.22

*On a personal note, my family continued to settle into our new home and school, survived the polar vortex, played at the Columbus Art Museum, traveled to Indiana for a family reunion where Ellie caught a fish. The girls took swim lessons and jumped off the diving board into the deep water! We traveled to Michigan where we toured the dunes and I attended my 20th HS reunion (Go Dutch!). We also went to Virginia where we played in the ocean and took the girls to meet their Great-Grandaddy and Sueshell. The girls played soccer for the first time – Abby even scored a goal! Elsa and Curious George dropped in for Halloween. We went to Oktoberfest in Powell and hosted our Annual Holiday Open House before celebrating Christmas with lots of American Girl Doll items.  Finally, we wrapped up the year last night with a quiet New Year’s Eve at home reflecting on 2014 and looking forward to 2015!

We’ll be recapping all our 2014 weddings with LOTS of pretty pictures in the weeks to come so make sure to watch for those.

Also, make sure to follow @edepweddings on instagram for wedding day pictures from our 2015 weddings – we’ll be at Walter Commons at St. Charles in January! We’ll also be at Highline Car House (3 times!), The Ivory Room, Jorgensen Farm, Wedgewood Country Club, Taylor Mansion, Camp Mary Orton, Scioto Reserve Country Club, Rockmill Brewery, The Renaissance, and The Westin. Lots of old favorites and several new-to-us locations that we can’t wait to visit!  We’ve still got room in our schedule for another wedding or two but not much more so if you’re looking for a wedding planner, make sure to get in touch soon!

Happy New Year from my family to yours! I hope that 2015 brings you more health, happiness, success, security, comfort, compassion, healing and love than you could have hoped for!

One Question You Might Not Be Asking…

Tuesday, November 25th, 2014

Happy Thanksgiving AND Happy Engagement Season!  Thanksgiving through Valentine’s Day is typically called Engagement Season in the wedding world since the most popular day of the year to propose is Christmas Eve followed by Valentine’s Day.  So if you’ve recently asked the question or said yes (or hope to soon), congratulations!

One of the first things many people do after getting engaged is head out to look at venues – no surprise, this time of year brings time off work and trips home if the couple lives away from their wedding city – and a great place to start since the venue typically dictates the wedding date.

There are lots of things to look at when viewing potential venues – price, food, bar options, size, dates available, decor, etc, etc, etc.  There are multiple lists out there of questions to ask venues – my friend Kay has written a couple killer checklists of things to ask both when you first call and when you visit venues so I won’t try to reinvent the wheel.  Those links are live and will take you right there – I would suggest at least looking them over before visiting venues as they are a fantastic jumping off point.

Often venues hand couples lists of recommended or required vendors.  If you receive one of those lists, I would suggest you always ask one simple question – Do the vendors on your recommended/preferred/exclusive list pay to be there?

Did you know that some venues demand vendors pay a fee to be on those ‘preferred’ lists?  Unfortunately, this practice is becoming more common in Ohio.  If the people on the list pay to be there, you’re being handed a list of paid advertisers and not necessarily a list of the best vendors in town – regardless of what they title it.  Those two groups may overlap but…not always.  Once you know whether the venue is recommending vendors just to line their pockets or because the recommendation is in the best interest of the couple, you can decide what to do with that list.  Having the whole picture makes the planning process much easier and leads to less disappointment down the road.

FYI – if you see Emilie Duncan Event Planning on a fellow vendor or venue’s list, it is because we earned it…not because we bought it.  We have never paid for a referral from a vendor and won’t in the future.

Good luck with your venue search and Happy Thanksgiving!

Andrea + Andrew: 04.26.14 – Video!

Wednesday, November 12th, 2014

We LOVED everything about Andrea and Andrew’s intimate wedding at Highline Car House back in April!  We had just under 60 people so we had room to play with the table set up and created a really warm, embracing floor plan with big farm tables from Event Source set with amazing, jaw dropping flowers from Flowers on Orchard Lane.

The day was gorgeous from beginning to end but their ceremony was incredible.  Watch this and you’ll see what I mean – grab your tissues too, it is as moving on film as it was in person!

Thanks to Little Tree Studios for the gorgeous film:

Kristin + Mark: 04.05.14 – Video!

Well, hello there!

*brushes the dust off the table*

Obviously it has been a while…okay, a really long while. It has been way too long but I have pretty video to share!  Forgive me? I promise I have lots more to share as we’ve had an really fantastic year so far with some absolutely amazing weddings with a few more still to go!

Today’s video was from our first wedding this year back on April 5.  Kristin and Mark were married at St. Joseph’s Cathedral and then had a gorgeous reception at one of our favorite venues, The Westin. Watch for his face while she walks up the aisle – so happy!!

Pictures from this gorgeous wedding still to come but here is the adorable trailer from Kimberly over at Picture The Love! Enjoy!
