Learning AND a trip to IKEA? Heaven!

Monday, April 14th, 2008

I was up bright and early on Saturday to attend the Association of Bridal Consultant’s Annual Midwest Conference in Cincinnati. Great speakers and some interesting conversations with other planners from around the Midwest – is there a better way to spend the day?

The owner of tomorrow’s Bookmark Worthy site was actually one of our speakers – they have been on my list of BW sites since the get go so it was great to see them in person and get to take a closer look at their products. Who was it? You will just have to wait until tomorrow to see!

One of the highlights was a fashion show of some amazing bridesmaid dresses by Carrie from Carrie Karibo Bridesmaids. My favorite trend in dresses? POCKETS! I love it – how fabulous to have someplace to put your lipstick and tissues other than your date’s jacket! There are some gorgeous dresses out there for your BFFs!

Elisa from Elegant Events in Kentucky and Brigid from I-Do Weddings in Cincinnati both spoke to the group. These are women who I have always looked up to – they are both excellent planners and a huge inspiration. Listening to that type of person is always a good way to get re-energized!

After the conference, I finally got my IKEA fix!!! Kasey from Bliss, Heather from Bridalsmiths and Quenetta from Something Blue and I RAN through the store in 45 minutes! It was packed and we all were ready to get home but couldn’t pass up the fabulous Swedish goodness that is IKEA. I managed to get out of the store with just a few purchases totaling $28. I should get an award for that, seriously!

It was a lovely weekend which ended with Randy, Ellie and me running around town looking for patio furniture and picking out paint for our master bedroom (which has sadly been white for a year and half!. We have a fun project planned for in there – can’t wait to share the pictures once we are done!

Stealing is bad. VERY BAD.

Another coordinator has taken it upon themselves to steal copyrighted material from my website and put it on theirs. Amazing. And the best part? It was my About page that she stole! And she is in Ohio!

It is weird because I was just talking with another coordinator about this happening to her!

This little line on every single page of my site means don’t steal:

Is it really that hard to come up with something original?

16 rules to live by

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

I don’t remember how I found these but I really like the “16 Rules to live by” from Bob Parsons, founder and CEO of Go Daddy:

1. Get and stay out of your comfort zone. I believe that not much happens of any significance when we’re in our comfort zone. I hear people say, “But I’m concerned about security.” My response to that is simple: “Security is for cadavers.”

2. Never give up. Almost nothing works the first time it’s attempted. Just because what you’re doing does not seem to be working, doesn’t mean it won’t work. It just means that it might not work the way you’re doing it. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and you wouldn’t have an opportunity.

3. When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think. There’s an old Chinese saying that I just love, and I believe it is so true. It goes like this: “The temptation to quit will be greatest just before you are about to succeed.”

4. With regard to whatever worries you, not only accept the worst thing that could happen, but make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be. Very seldom will the worst consequence be anywhere near as bad as a cloud of “undefined consequences.” My father would tell me early on, when I was struggling and losing my shirt trying to get Parsons Technology going, “Well, Robert, if it doesn’t work, they can’t eat you.”

5. Focus on what you want to have happen. Remember that old saying, “As you think, so shall you be.”

6. Take things a day at a time. No matter how difficult your situation is, you can get through it if you don’t look too far into the future, and focus on the present moment. You can get through anything one day at a time.

7. Always be moving forward. Never stop investing. Never stop improving. Never stop doing something new. The moment you stop improving your organization, it starts to die. Make it your goal to be better each and every day, in some small way. Remember the Japanese concept of Kaizen. Small daily improvements eventually result in huge advantages.

8. Be quick to decide. Remember what General George S. Patton said: “A good plan violently executed today is far and away better than a perfect plan tomorrow.”

9. Measure everything of significance. I swear this is true. Anything that is measured and watched, improves.

10. Anything that is not managed will deteriorate. If you want to uncover problems you don’t know about, take a few moments and look closely at the areas you haven’t examined for a while. I guarantee you problems will be there.

11. Pay attention to your competitors, but pay more attention to what you’re doing. When you look at your competitors, remember that everything looks perfect at a distance. Even the planet Earth, if you get far enough into space, looks like a peaceful place.

12. Never let anybody push you around. In our society, with our laws and even playing field, you have just as much right to what you’re doing as anyone else, provided that what you’re doing is legal.

13. Never expect life to be fair. Life isn’t fair. You make your own breaks. You’ll be doing good if the only meaning fair has to you, is something that you pay when you get on a bus (i.e., fare).

14. Solve your own problems. You’ll find that by coming up with your own solutions, you’ll develop a competitive edge. Masura Ibuka, the co-founder of SONY, said it best: “You never succeed in technology, business, or anything by following the others.” There’s also an old Asian saying that I remind myself of frequently. It goes like this: “A wise man keeps his own counsel.”

15. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Lighten up. Often, at least half of what we accomplish is due to luck. None of us are in control as much as we like to think we are.

16. There’s always a reason to smile. Find it. After all, you’re really lucky just to be alive. Life is short. More and more, I agree with my little brother. He always reminds me: “We’re not here for a long time; we’re here for a good time.”

A Day at the Races

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

I spent a lovely day at Churchill Downs in Louisville with the Kentucky Branch of the Association of Bridal Consultants. Had lunch at Millionaire’s Row, bet (read: lost) some money, got a lovely sunburn on my arms and got private lessons from a pro named Jacki who also happens to be a consultant (Do you know what a trifecta box is and how to place that bet? I can say that I now do!). As is every meeting with KY ABC, it was a fabulous day!

BACKUP YOUR COMPUTER! DO IT RIGHT NOW!

I just got word that they were unable to save anything off my hard drive. That means I lost any emails sent or received from around March 1 through last week – it is going to take my forever to recreate that. I lost well over 1000 bookmarks. I also lost the last 2 weeks of work documents.

*sigh*

Bear with me as I try to recreate all that stuff, it is going to take a long time. Anyone have a wall I can hit my head against?

Seriously, go back up your computer. What are you waiting for?

Back and forth with a dead laptop

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

Back from Columbus, heading out again tomorrow and my laptop is dead.

I got back from Columbus on Sunday night – Conference was great, as always. Got to see some old friends, made some new ones, learned a lot and just had a wonderful time. A few pictures from the reception on Saturday night:

Beth and Abigail from Fairy Godmothers in Louisville:

Jessica from the Seelbach Hilton in Louisville:

Dancing the night away:

I am heading up to Cleveland tomorrow for a weekend of marathon meetings with my Cleveland clients – I can’t wait to see them! It feels like forever since I got to sit down and talk with them all. A tasting, planning meetings, a tent meeting – a busy weekend indeed!

And for the 2nd time in as many weeks my laptop is back in for repairs. I fired her up on Sunday night and the hard drive decided to die. This means I lost ALL my emails. ALL my favorites. SOME of the my files (I was smart enough to back up my files before sending it in last time but not the emails.) I get a new hard drive and hopefully all will finally be well but I have to recreate quite a few files and emails. UGH.

Another post with some trendy things coming up soon!

Off to C-town again

Friday, March 31st, 2006

I am off to Columbus for the Annual Mid-West ABC Conference. I get to stay with Marni (Yay!) and hang out with other coordinators including some old friends from Cleveland.

I will be back on Monday with info, and maybe some pictures, on the latest wedding trends. Have a fantastic weekend!

Got plagiarism?

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

It happens all over the web and every single day – I know that. But it still ticks me off when someone decides to take entire pages of my website and pass them off as their own. I worked very hard to design and create my website and it was all my own wording.

Expect a cease and desist letter very soon, Beth. Honestly, if you can’t even come up with your own package descriptions, how can you expect to come up with an original, unique wedding for your clients?

Shame on you – stealing isn’t nice! And neither is copyright infringment!

Blue Champagne: Lunch at Tiffany's

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

What a lovely day! I attended the monthly luncheon for the Kentucky chapter of ABC. It was held at the Headley Whitney Museum. Set in the middle of horse farms, black fences lining the roads, gorgeous horses grazing on green grass for miles – what an incredible location!

The meeting was hosted by 3 Lexington coordinators – Jacki Boyd, Alicia DeBoor and Deanna Dillender. They did a fabulous job with the ‘Lunch at Tiffany’s’ theme. The tables were phenomenal with lilies as big as a toddler’s head from Three Toads Farm and there was Blue Champagne** – doesn’t get much more fabulous than that!

It was so nice to finally get to meet coordinators from around the state. I also got to see some coordinators I knew from past conferences who I really admire – it was very nice to catch up with them! A wonderful lunch with a wonderful group of ladies!

They even forgave me when I asked the most basic of Kentucky questions: When is the Derby? I now know it is the first Saturday in May (May 6 this year) and I promise I will never have to ask again!

**Blue Champagne is Champagne with Blue Curacao. Very, very yummy. I wasn’t sure after the first glass though so I had to have 2…the perils of my job!

Super cool toy/business tool

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

I get a ton of business cards each year and entering all that info into Outlook so it syncs with my phone ranks right up there with getting my eyebrows waxed – not what I would call fun but seriously necessary. (Side Note: I have a lead on an eyebrow place, call off the search.)

Enter this little gem of a product:

*sigh* Pretty, huh? Doesn’t look like much, I know BUT IT IS.

Simply scan a business card and it takes all the info – the company name, person, title, fax, phone, cell phone, website, email, EVERYTHING and it magically appears in Outlook. It even saves a scan of the business card for reference. It has a glitch or two: extra creative cards sometimes result in some very strange company names and phone numbers but it does pretty darn well – AND overall it is ridiculously faster than me entering all that info. Now it is all at my fingertips, ready to be called upon at a moment’s notice.

Go technology.
