16. Visit my old apartment in Astoria, Queens, New York

It may not look like much but 29-07 31st Street was home for about 1-1/2 years in 1998 and 1999. I paid an amazing $820 in rent a month for a real 1 bedroom (not a studio, thankyouverymuch) on the second floor of the old pre-war building. I still marvel that I paid that little in NYC – of course at the time it was basically 1 paycheck for me! It really was a great location for me – close to the subway, safe area, lots of restaurants and bars.

Not much has changed so the trip back was super nostalgic for me – I ran around the old neighborhood and hit a few of my favorite haunts:
*I stopped in the Mini-Mart where I used to get milk and little cartons of ice cream on hot days. The guy actually recognized me – it was funny to watch him try to figure out where he knew me from. I finally told him it had been about 6 years since he last saw me and the light bulb came on. Funny how people stay in your mind.
*My favorite restaurant, Uncle George’s, was closed for renovation (utter and complete disappointment there, I really wanted some good Greek food).
*I had lunch at Cronin and Phalen – an Irish pub that I used to hang out in from time to time. *Saw Mary McGuire’s, the bar that my friends “The Greek Boys” and I used to go to and hang out. Bar downstairs, Off Track Betting upstairs – always fun when the old guys wanted me to pick the horses for them.

It was a great trip down memory lane and I am so glad I got the chance to go back.
